Mom uniform?

I've been mulling over this the past week.  Several times I've come across an article in either a parenting magazine or blog claiming "The top 10 things a mom must own!" or "Don't leave home without...."  It made me wonder.  Do I have a mom uniform? 

Clothes I can't live without:

Wide legged/flare jeans.  I have a thing about covering my shoes when I'm sitting.  I have no idea where it came from, but if my ankles/shoes are totally showing because my pant leg comes up?  I'm mortified deep inside.

Skirts.  As long as it's a skirt I can pair with a tank or a dressier shirt it's good. 

Sun/day dresses.  I love super dressy dresses, but then as soon as I put them on, I feel too dressy.  Am I weird?  So I like the happy medium a day dress brings.  You can look dressy for the day but not so dressy people are like "Why are you so dressed up?  This is J-town.  Nobody ever gets out of their sweats."  (Or maybe those are just the other parents I see dropping their kids off at school....!)

Sweats.  If I have zero things to do, I go straight into sweatpants.  I don't care if it's 90 degrees outside.  I will happily sit in my house with the A/C and curl up in a pair of sweats.

Sweatshirts.  I have a giant bucket filled with sweatshirts.  Not just filled, overflowing.  The top doesn't even fit anymore.  I blame winter.  When it gets really stupid cold, I throw on a sweatshirt and call it a day.  Makes me feel bad for when I forget to change before a piano lesson, but hey, it's cold outside, I'm allowed.  :D

Other than that I can't say anything else is a 'must have'.  (besides basics like tanks/tees/underwear :D )

Now that I'm back up to several days a week of playing dress up I'm bringing back my outfit posts.  To start it back off here's what I wore today.

I'm pretty excited because my new jeans are expected to arrive tomorrow!  Also I just ordered a new pair of tall charcoal boots and a lightweight olivey colored sweater.  Everything is from Hautelook where surprisingly I've been able to find decent steals :D

Cookies and outfits

One perk of summer is wearing skirts.  I like shorts but I don't so much like them on me.  I have a few pairs but more often than not I'd rather wear a skirt.  Luckily over the weekend while we were Target shopping I picked up two fun new skirts.

I really wish the blue/white one had pockets but the denim one does so it works out.  :D

For the 4th of July we made sugar cookies in shapes of gingerbread men/women, buffaloes and stars.  Then while I taught piano my awesome hubby made frosting and frosted them!  They were waaaaay too tasty.

For the 4th of July we played games in the morning while we waited for the weather to decide what it wanted to do.  By noon it didn't look so dubious and we made plans to meet a couple of friends at the Reservoir for the afternoon.  Little Miss was NOT a fan of being in the lake while Monster Bean swam like a fiend.  The only way Little Miss would hang out in the water was if she was snuggling me on a blow up raft.  But she was content enough to play in the sand while the boys played in the water.  We didn't buy fireworks this year but were able to watch our neighbors shoot theirs off and hopefully on Saturday we will stay up late enough to watch the big show in town.  :)

Beekeeper's Quilt

So I decided that I am crazy enough to try my hand at the Beekeeper's Quilt.  I hemmed and I hawed and I drooled over all the other finished projects and their beautiful various combinations.  What got me in the end is that while it's a big endeavor, it's also one that can be done in small chunks and then piece by piece put together without ever having to sit down for one giant pain in the butt seaming session.  (I could never do a quilt I think; I could put all the small parts together, but I'd lose it once it came to sewing the whole queen sized thing together)

I have about 10 hexipuffs done and today I put together a little cluster.  I'm lucky that I have enough odd bits of yarn to create color clusters that go together.  My first happen to be a pink/purply combo with a taupe middle.

Right now my second cluster are blues but I might be a little more hardpressed to find the right weight yarn to make a lot.  I have enough for the three 'main colors' but the off ones be  need some help.  I know that these are supposed to be made out of scraps of yarn, but I'm a little tempted to order lots of sock yarn from KnitPicks and just go to town.  :D

Also, outfit of the day!

Oh I suppose last last thing.  :D  While out shopping with a girlfriend yesterday I realized that sometimes no amount of sucking it in will ever make a super cute clingy leopard print jersey dress ever look good on this post-baby body.  I think the only time I could have pulled it off was in highschool.  :D  I'm officially too old for the junior's section :D  The plus side is that my skirt collection increased by 2 :)

Outfit of the Day and FO!

There's something to be said for running around in sweats in the morning at the park and then getting prettied up for later.  Especially on a hot summer day when skirts feel like a cool must.  :D

I used to wear necklaces all the time, but it feels like I don't wear them as much.  I bought this fun necklace last summer from Etsy. 

Last night I also finished a cotton summer dress for Little Miss.  It's a little on the big side but I'm hoping it will shrink a bit in the wash (100% cotton yarn!) and it'll fit for awhile at least.  She can always wear a tee under it as well.

It's from a Lion Brand pattern.  Normally I dislike knitting flat and then seaming, but when I started this dress I wasn't in the mood for trying to put it all together :D  While seaming up the sides I added inside pockets instead of doing them on the outside.  I also thought it would be fun to have the pockets knit in the contrasting color.  It was a really quick knit and I'd love to knit her a collection of them seeing as she lives in dresses this summer.  :)

Shoes!

The mailman really knows how to brighten up my day by delivering my shoes a whole day early!  Yay!  I had never heard of DSW until one opened up in my hometown.  Then I haven't even been to that one but perused their goodies online the other week.  The defense I used when the hubby rolled his eyes at my purchases was a) I need good neutral colored pumps to go with everything.  After all I have a reliable pair of black ones but black doesn't go with everything.  And b) I want shorter not going to kill myself pretty brown heeled sandals.  I'm done doing the stiletto thing.  I always feel like I'm going to roll an ankle whenever I walk to church carrying Little Miss AND my purse filled with things like crayons and books.  Plus there are all those stairs.  It's just asking for trouble I tell ya. 

So the shoes.  I have abnormally fat feet.  They are really not that long, about at size 7, but they are extraordinarily wide.  The last time I had them measured I'm about an EEE width.  Usually not a problem because when I buy fancy shoes I can go up a size or two and have them still fit both lengthwise and width wise.  But when you start delving into the upper crust of shoes, that's when things get ...awkward.  For instance Steve Maddens will never ever fit my feet.  Even a size 10 is tough to comfortably put on.  So when I saw these absolutely adorable and gorgeous Betsey Johnson shoes on super sale, I was really nervous.  I checked as many sizing places as I could for good measurements on the width.  There were only sizes 9 and 7 available so it was either going to work or not.  Arming myself with lots of reviews and measurements, I ordered the 9's.  The sandals were easier as the reviews said they ran a little on the wider side and I felt comfortable ordering a size 8.

This afternoon I giddily ripped open my big box of goodies and pulled them out.  Even more perfect in person and the blush color of the pumps is so perfect. 

As I was pulling them out Monster Bean kept exclaiming about the fun leopard print that's inside the shoes and on the bottom.  They fit just lovely!

My second pair of shoes were equally as awesome.

How super cute, right?  The soles are also padded so they are super comfortable to walk in.  Overall I'm really happy with my new shoes and I can't wait to go out somewhere and show them off.  Or, being the nerd I am, just sit here on the couch with a pair of them on.  :)

Thursday Outfit of the Day

I should clarify that I didn't change, the preppy outfit was from yesterday :D

Finally getting a chance to wear this skirt which I bought way back in April!  Honestly I had forgotten I even had the orangey cami but it works out perfectly.  :)

When I was all dressed Little Miss ran up to me and went on and on and on about my 'pretty dress' and I was pretty just like her today.  :D
